Ceiling fans: benefits

Many people don't realize ceiling fans can do more then simply collect dust. Ceiling fans are beneficial in both, winter and summer months, and can lower your energy bills, while still providing comfort, style and beautiful lighting.

Ceiling fans can lower your energy use up to 60% and helps protect our climate by reducing the greenhouse effects on our atmosphere. Ceiling fan performance and energy savings relies on proper installation and use.

Many homeowners might hesitate using a ceiling fan in the winter months, but even then, you can reap the benefits and savings. In the winter months, since warm air is lighter than cool air, your ceiling fan should run in a clockwise direction or make sure the leading edges of the fan blades point down to push the warm air down. The fan will circulate the warm air that is trapped at the ceiling and push it back down to the floor. You should run it on a lower speed to avoid drafts and a wind chill effect. This can lower energy use up to 15% and reduces the need and clutter of other heating devices (which are typically more expensive).

Many homeowners with air conditioning assume they don't need ceiling fans. However, not only can you save up to 40% with the use of a ceiling fan, you can also increase the comfort of your home. During summer months you want to make sure your fan is running in a counter-clockwise direction, or make sure the leading edges of the fan blades point up to move air down, creating a nice breeze and making the room feel cooler. Effective circulation can make your room feel up to 8 degrees cooler, reducing your dependency on your air conditioner.

For maximum energy savings, consider an Energy Star ceiling fan. These fans are up to 60% more efficient and circulate up to 15% more air, without sacrificing style.

However, proper installation is also important and must be considered. Ceiling fans can weigh up to 50 pounds and need to be properly anchored to a ceiling joist. For optimal performance, the blades should be between 7-9 feet from the floor, 10-12 inches below the ceiling and at least 18 inches away from the closest wall. Several fans should be installed throughout your home and placed in key locations. All frequently used rooms should have a ceiling fan.

additional ceiling fan benefits:

  • They keep rooms airy and breezy and keep rooms from becoming "stuffy".
  • They can be used to enhance your homes' decor. There are many designs to compliment your home from chic and modern, to rustic, as well as a variety of sizes to choose from.
  • They can improve the lighting in many of your rooms. They can even provide energy saving light bulbs and light fixtures, increasing your energy savings.
  • They can compliment your AC and furnaces, reducing your dependency on them and acting as a backup if your AC goes down.
  • They can even help keep insects and flies from being so pesky.
  • And again, they can provide energy saving costs and increase the value and comfort of your home!
